Hina-matsuri
(The Doll Festivel)

This is a festival for girls on March 3.
It is thought to have originated from
a Chinese rite which purified people
by transferring their impurities to
paper images, which could then be thrown into the rivers or the sea.
Dolls in court dress representing the
emperor and empress, their attendants and other members of the court are put on display and there is
a small celebration with special rice cakes and drinks.
